With an eye toward fueling inspiration and supporting its commitment as an innovative design leader in the industry, American Standard Brands announced the opening of a new industrial design studio at its Piscataway, N.J. research facility. This state-of-the-art studio will further enhance communication and collaboration among its talented design team, while cementing the Company’s reputation for engineering industry-changing technologies. In the past year, American Standard has tripled the size of its design department, plus invested in an innovation team. The industrial design studio was created to accommodate these growing departments and provide an ideal work space for developing the next generation of ground-breaking product designs. The environment of this spacious 4,200 sq. ft. studio is a designer’s dream. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light. Large common work surfaces and a fully open space layout facilitate collaboration in which to create, discuss, and exchange ideas. Ample facilities to develop and display mock-ups, prototypes, and mobile inspiration boards further stimulate the flow of creative juices. Each designer is generously supported with access to state-of-the-art computer software, as well. “You can sense the spirit of creativity as soon as you enter the new design studio,” stated Jean-Jacques L’Henaff, vice president – design, LIXIL Water Technology Americas, American Standard and DXV, and driving force behind the redesigned facilities. “We believe that our customers, showroom and retail partners, and trade professionals will greatly benefit from the stunning design and technological innovations that will be created in this cutting-edge space.” L’Henaff also believes that the studio’s proximity to New York City, one of the richest cultural centers in the country, helps the Company attract the best and the brightest industrial designers. Plus, its metropolitan location offers American Standard a connection to the ideas and energy of the City’s influential design scene. The creative team led by L’Henaff can also enjoy the convenience of the DXV by American Standard luxury showroom and office space in the heart of the Flatiron District in Manhattan. Design Team ExpandedFurther augmenting its design proficiency, American Standard recently hired Brian Kalember to join their team of industrial designers. He previously worked as an associate industrial designer for Delta Faucet Company, where he developed faucets for both fashion and retail brands. This Old House named Magnetix™ hand showers from Moen to its fifth annual “This Old House Top 100,” a list of the 100 best new home products of the year. Each year, the editors spend months scouting, testing, and culling countless new home products to identify the most distinctive, useful and innovative in seven categories, including the bath. Magnetix was selected for its powerful magnetic dock that allows for easy release of the hand shower, as well as a secure return back into place — even when your eyes are closed.”Magnetix is one of those products that makes you wonder, ‘why has no one thought of this before?'” says Scott Omelianuk, editor at This Old House. “The addition of a magnet to the dock is ingenious — it’s an elegantly simple, but impactful, solution to a common household problem, the hand shower slipping from the dock. As soon as we saw it, we knew it had to be one of our Top 100. Home companies release thousands of new products every year, and our job is to highlight the ones with staying power — those that are in some way brilliant and will make our readers’ lives better…Magnetix definitely fits the bill.”In addition to the magnetic dock, Magnetix showerheads also feature six high-performance spray options to customize the showering experience, with the choice of a dial or push button to change between settings. A flexible, 60-inch metal hose offers greater reach in the tub or shower — allowing consumers to accomplish other tasks, such as bathing children, washing pets and cleaning the shower, with ease. A lower showerhead provides easier access for those with limited mobility.”We are incredibly honored that Magnetix has been included in this year’s Top 100 list,” says Maribeth Kwasniewski, director of retail marketing, Moen. “At Moen, it’s our mission to create solutions that fulfill unmet consumer needs, improving homeowners’ everyday interactions with products in the kitchen and bath. With Magnetix, we’ve transformed the traditional hand shower experience, making it easier and more intuitive, and we’re thrilled to be recognized by This Old House for this innovation.”A full list of the honorees featured in the November/December issue can be found at thisoldhouse.com/top100.

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO®) has extended the deadline calling for formal proposals toward the development of the 2017 Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard (WE Stand). Proposals will now be accepted until 5 p.m. PST on Jan. 29.

The proposal form, with instructions and background on IAPMO’s ANSI-accredited consensus process, as well as the WE Stand draft document, can be found at: http://www.iapmo.org/WEStand/Pages/DocumentInformation.aspx.

All proposals recommending new text, revised text, or the deletion of text must be written in legislative format and clearly state the reason behind the recommendation. The standard, which will use as its basis the water and sanitation provisions within IAPMO’s 2015 Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement (GPMCS), draws upon IAPMO’s core competency and industry expertise in plumbing systems for the purpose of providing comprehensive requirements to optimize water use practices attributed to the built environment while maintaining protection of the public health, safety and welfare. IAPMO will employ a voluntary consensus development process accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for the development of WE Stand, enabling anyone to have a voice in the development of the standard. The WEStand Technical Committee, charged with the development and ongoing maintenance of WE Stand, brings together an impressive and diverse assembly of plumbing and water efficiency experts. IAPMO urges its members and other interested parties to get involved in the development process to ensure effectiveness in preserving the public health, safety, and welfare through strict governance of its codes and standards. Manufacturers, potential users of the standard, installers and maintainers, labor representatives, design professionals, enforcing authorities, and consumers all benefit from a cooperative effort in developing codes and standards.

Gerber, an industry leader in high performing plumbing fixtures, has announced seven new hand hygiene sinks to benefit environments where hygiene and cross-contamination control is of concern – hospitals, doctors’ offices, schools, child care centers, industrial buildings, among others.Leading the introduction is the Monticello™ Hygienic Hospital Basin (Model NH-12-661; list price $800).  This sink offers the industry’s highest level of cross-contamination protection.   Features include:Deep basin with sloped angles to minimize splashing, germ-pooling and contaminationOffset drain to reduce splashing and aerosolization from direct contact with water streamSealed overflow to eliminate hazards of germ collectionSeveral other Gerber sink options are now also part of the hygienic offerings:NH-12-654/658NH-12-834/838NH-12-474/478Each of these sinks has a sealed overflow to eliminate contamination risks and can be installed for ADA compliance (with the exception of NH-12-661, which is not ADA compliant).“According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) approximately 722,000 inpatients per year contract infections from the surrounding environment in healthcare facilities, which results in an increase in the cost of care,” says Eric Peterson, Gerber’s vice president of sales.  “Because of that, hospitals and medical facilities are heavily incentivized to reduce the risk of patient contamination and infection for inpatient care.  These sink options can make a significant difference in strengthening those environments and eliminating risk.”For more information on the Gerber brand or its products, visit www.gerberonline.com or call (866) 538-5536.
