BrassCraft® Safety+PLUS® excess flow valves and connectors incorporate state-of-the-art technology with precision engineering, providing an advanced solution to homeowners that helps protect against gas related fires and explosions. In the event of a gas line rupture or disconnect, the Safety+PLUS® valve automatically activates to restrict gas flow at the appliance. This immediate action helps avert the potential for a hazardous buildup of gas in the home. Gas flow is controlled at the appliance where the rupture occurred; the rest of the home’s system will continue to function. The valve will remain activated until the gas line is properly repaired. Once repaired, the Safety+PLUS® valve automatically resets to restore normal gas flow to the appliance.

Safety+PLUS Advantage® gas connectors combine excess flow technology with the advanced corrosion resistance of the ProCoat® polymer coating, to provide a safer connector for your home. The coating effectively protects the connector from prolonged exposure to most harsh household chemicals that can cause deterioration and pinhole leaks.

Viega was awarded Plastic Pipe Institute’s (PPI) 2016 “Project of the Year” award in the building and construction division for its Big Bear Area Regional Wastewater Agency (BBARWA) heating bed project.

Each year, PPI, a manufacturing-based trade association representing all segments of the plastic pipe industry, recognizes member-company projects for significant achievements involving the use of polyethylene pipe.

“This system is self-operational and I’ve had zero maintenance issues with it from Viega’s side of things,” said Fred Uhler, plant manager, BBARWA. “Viega was able to answer our call for this unique project.”

The BBARWA, located in Big Bear, Calif., contacted Viega Radiant Design Services with a project that needed an innovative solution to reduce the water content and weight of sludge. Viega developed a heated slab for the sludge to dry on for enclosed and ventilated space.

BBARWA installed Viega’s innovative Climate Mat. Arriving on the job site in a pre-assembled roll, Viega Climate Mat is best for applications over 10,000 square feet and comes complete with temporary supply-and-return headers and tubing. Installation is as easy as unrolling and securing, so there’s no concern about proper spacing or laying individual circuits. The mat system is also pre-pressurized and numbered for accurate placement.

“Viega is truly honored to receive this award from our partners in the plastics pipe industry,” said David Desjardins, product manager, heating and cooling, Viega. “The BBARWA project showed Viega’s strength in designing solutions that can improve lives, reduce energy usage and help protect the environment.”

“As far as we know, this is the first time PEX tubing has been used to dry treated sludge,” said Tony Radoszewski, president, PPI. “Drying the sludge before it is trucked to the composting facility removes water to make it lighter, which saves a significant amount of money in transportation.”

The project used approximately 22,500 linear feet of 5/8-inch ViegaPEX™ Barrier crosslinked polyethylene tubing at nine-inch centers to make up the Climate Mats and cover the 16,000-square foot slab area. Before the slab was poured, the pre-engineered mat system was rolled out and installed in less than a day.

Dormont today upheld its safety-first initiative by announcing its new SmartSense™ Excess Flow Valve & Thermal Shutoff device. Designed to help protect against excessive gas flows, gas-related fires, and even explosions, SmartSense’s advanced dual-sensing technology sets new industry standards for ensuring residential gas appliance connection safety.

SmartSense features an internal valve mechanism that automatically reduces gas flow in the event of a dangerous downstream gas line rupture. Gas flow to the in-home appliance is thereby restricted until an upstream manual shutoff valve is closed or the gas leak is repaired. Once fixed, SmartSense automatically resets and a normal gas flow is restored to the appliance.

SmartSense also includes thermal shutoff capabilities to detect increased temperatures and terminate gas flow, thereby minimizing or preventing damages within your home. Each valve, constructed with an internal sensing ring, activates and automatically stops gas flow to your in-home appliance when exposed to temperatures between 350°F and 425°F.

The Dormont SmartSense is easily installed and remains compatible with modern residential gas appliances. Both CSA design-certified and California DSA-listed, the SmartSense device can be mounted either horizontally or vertically with gas appliances. The Dormont SmartSense is Made in the USA.
