Lochinvar is pleased to announce the February winners in its VIP Contractor Program. Michael Scott of Skyline Plumbing & Mechanical Inc. in South Provo, UT, was named the latest winner of the VIP Installation Showcase, and Jason Olson of Alpine Plumbing in Brookfield, WI, was selected in the monthly drawing. Both winning contractors will take part in Lochinvar’s Nashville Experience trip this June, which includes an all-expenses-paid trip for two and tickets to the world’s largest country music festival.
An Impressive Installation
Scott’s entry in the VIP Installation Showcase, which is housed on Lochinvar’s Facebook page as well as on www.knightheatingboiler.com, highlighted Skyline Plumbing & Mechanical’s recent update to a heating system at a Utah residence. According to Scott, “The existing system employed a cast iron boiler, b-vent flue, inadequate combustion air, under-pumped 1,000 foot rolls of B-PEX for each loop, and a ‘rat’s nest’ of control wiring.”
Skyline Plumbing & Mechanical replaced the boiler with a 110,000 Btu/hr KNIGHT® Wall Mount Heating Boiler (WHN110). Concurrent upgrades included Lochinvar-approved flue with alternate vertical concentric venting, which uses the existing b-vent to route the new vent pipe through and also bring fresh combustion air to the boiler. To overcome the excessive head pressure, double pumps were installed to counterbalance the existing 1,000 foot loops of half-inch PEX. The installation was completed with the connection of new controls.
“Since the upgrade, the homeowners have enjoyed consistent comfort and are very pleased with their new Lochinvar boiler system,” said Scott.
Through April, VIPs can upload a photo and brief description of any qualified boiler or boiler/Squire combination installation for a chance to be named the monthly winner of the VIP Installation Showcase. Once an entry has been submitted, it is featured in a gallery where Facebook users can vote for their favorite installation. Those not engaged with social media can enter and vote on www.knightheatingboiler.com. The top three entries with the most votes each
month are selected as finalists, and a panel of Lochinvar judges chooses the monthly winner. New and repeat entries can be submitted each month for additional chances to win.
Rewards for Registrations
In addition to Scott’s February win, Olson was named the winner in the monthly VIP Contractor Program drawing. His product registration card was randomly selected, earning Olson a spot on the Nashville Experience for himself and a guest.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to take part in this year’s Nashville Experience,” said Olson. “I’ve heard great things about the Lochinvar headquarters facility, and I’m looking forward to meeting the Lochinvar team and other VIP Contractors this summer.”
In addition to each registration offering a chance to win the Nashville Experience, registrations of the high-efficiency KNIGHT® Boiler, Solution™ Boiler and Cadet™ Boiler also earn a $25 Visa® Reward Card[1], while every registered Squire® Indirect Water Heater earns a $10 reward card.

Sioux Chief is offering a technical bulletin on No Lead Product Handling Recommendations & Chemical Compatibility for Products Commonly Used in Plumbing Systems. The document particularly focuses on soldering No Lead brass, which requires a different method than traditional alloys prior to The Reduction of Lead In Drinking Water Act.

Rough plumbing manufacturer, Sioux Chief, posted a technical bulletin that focuses on soldering No Lead brass, which requires a different method than traditional alloys prior to The Reduction of Lead In Drinking Water Act.
Many No Lead or lead-free alloys use special chemicals in their composition, making heat diffusion more difficult. As a result, it is more challenging for solder to adhere to No Lead silicon brass than to traditional leaded brass. For No Lead brass, a different procedure is required to make common plumbing solder joints.
In the past, the presence of lead in a fitting allowed a torch’s heat to transfer thermally within a fitting, allowing the solder to flow quicker and more uniformly. Today, contractors and tradesmen deal with many No Lead alloys and specifically silicon alloys that do not act the same way.
If proper procedures are not followed, joints may be compromised resulting in leaks and future issues. Reference Sioux Chief’s Tech Bulletin on soldering No Lead brass (TB 8-15-13) or Sioux Chief’s Tech Bulletin on the material differences between commonly available No Lead alloys.
Sioux Chief’s No Lead alloys, by nature of their alloying elements, achieve higher dezincification resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance, but must be treated with greater care when soldering.

ELEGANT INTERIOR DESIGNS NAMED 2014 REGIONAL CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR
Firm Wins for Residential Bathroom, $30,000-$60,000 Category Ambler, PA (February 25, 2014) – The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) named Elegant Interior Designs in Ambler, PA the 2014 Northeast Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) in the Residential Bathroom, $30,000-$60,000 category in its annual awards competition. The awards showcase members who have demonstrated outstanding work through their remodeling projects. Elegant Interior Designs (http://elegantinteriordesigns.com) specializes in commercial and residential design, including kitchen and bath design, color consultation, space planning, window treatment design and home staging. The firm was founded by principal designer Pamela Kofsky in 2003 to provide clients with a completed dream inspired design that fits their personal taste and lifestyle. Kofsky partnered with Tom Hawks, contractor, of Total Home Solution on the award-winning project. Elegant Interiors Designs’ winning entry in collaboration with Total Home Solution involved incorporating a very tiny, outdated bathroom into a larger, more luxurious one. The new bathroom checklist included: double sinks, a vanity tower, sitting area for hairstyling and make-up application, pocket shelves, toiletry shelf, a larger shower with multiple shower heads, a soaking tub, and a separate room for the commode. The design details were evident throughout the bathroom from the artwork to the shades and even in the accent items in the pocket shelves. The Contractor of the Year (CotY) award is widely considered to be the premier competition of its kind throughout the remodeling industry. Contractors from around the country vie for the CotY Awards on an annual basis. The entries for this year’s competition totaled more than $72 million worth of remodeling projects. Awards will be presented on Friday, March 28, 2014 in New Orleans, LA. “I am so thrilled to be recognized by such an elite organization,” said Kofsky. “The prestigious Contractor of the Year (CotY) award is an honor to win as the interior designer for a bathroom renovation. It is an excellent way to share with clients the impact an interior designer can have on any space in your home.” For the design story behind the 2014 COTY Award, visit http://elegantinteriordesigns.com/the-design-story-behind-the-2014-coty-award/
