TOTO, the largest plumbing manufacturer in the world with $5.1 billion in annual sales, announced today that its high-efficiency commercial wall-hung toilet, two ultra high-efficiency urinals, and wall-hung commercial lavatory have no Red List ingredients and are listed in the International Living Future Institute’s (IFLI) Declare Products Database as “Red List Free.”

Declare Program Status

The IFLI’s Declare Program, often compared to nutritional labeling on packaged food, has three Declaration Status options—“Declared,” “Living Building Challenge Compliant,” and “Red List Free.” If the ILFI finds a product contains an ingredient from the Living Building Challenge’s (LBC) Red List, that ingredient is listed in red on the label, and the product is listed in the Declare database as “Declared.” If it ascertains that a the product contains a Red List ingredient with a LBC exception, the exception is noted on the Declare label, and the product is listed as “LBC Compliant.” If a product has no Red List ingredients—like TOTO’s high-efficiency wall-hung commercial toilet, ultra high-efficiency urinals, and wall-hung commercial lavatory—it is listed as “Red List Free.” “Transparency is the ‘secret ingredient’ in all TOTO products. It’s the TOTO Way,” said Bill Strang, President of Operations for the Americas. “The IFLI’s Declare program offers an important opportunity for us to share our company’s industry leadership in products that contribute to healthy, environmentally-responsible design.” In addition to its “Red List Free” products, TOTO also announces three new PVC-free high-efficiency toilets (HETs) are “LBC Compliant,” five new HETs are “Declared,” and a new commercial undercounter lavatory is “Declared.” In new categories to earn Declare labels, TOTO announces four high-efficiency and ultra high-efficiency EcoPower sensor flush valves for both toilets and urinals are “LBC Compliant.” Its EcoPower high-efficiency sensor faucet is “Declared.” “TOTO is committed to making transparency reporting simpler, easy to understand, and useful to the build-design community,” said Strang. “Together with our partner, Sustainable Minds, we have furthered our commitment to moving ‘beyond compliance’ by incorporating the material health information from our new Declare labels into the existing environmental impact data for our products.”

Sustainable Minds Material Health Overviews

With its new Declare labels’ data as the foundation, TOTO has added eight new SM Material Health Overviews (MHO)—both stand alone and integrated in an existing award-winning TOTO Transparency Report. Additional MHOs will be added on a rolling basis. TOTO’s MHOs are a strategic marketing and lead generation tool that informs safer and healthier product purchase decisions. By distilling the essential technical information from TOTO’s disclosure documents, they make material health information understandable and meaningful, providing plain language interpretation and descriptions of how TOTO is improving the material health of its products. TOTO’s new MHOs may be viewed on the Sustainable Minds’ website in the TOTO Showroom. Healthy, ecologically sound products are highly prized by both design and construction professionals and consumers. However, identifying them is an often onerous burden. TOTO is dedicated to facilitating this process by providing deeper and deeper levels of transparency about its products’ material heath and environmental impacts.

Company’s Technologically-Advanced Personal Cleansing Systems are Evidence of its People-First Innovation Design Philosophy

TOTO, the largest plumbing manufacturer in the world with $5.1 billion dollars in annual sales, announced today that it has achieved a major global milestone with its popular Washlet line of personal cleansing systems. To date, the company has sold more than 40 million Washlets worldwide since their 1980 launch in Japan. During the past 35 years, TOTO has expanded its Washlet sales around the globe, and today these revolutionary personal cleansing systems are available on all seven continents, in countries as diverse as the U.S., Germany, France, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Taiwan, India, Brazil, Mexico, China, Singapore, Korea, and the United Kingdom – to name but a few. Washlets Washlets use pure, clean water – and myriad technological innovations – to make their users cleaner, happier, more refreshed than they have ever felt after a bathroom break by reinventing the humble toilet seat as a warm water personal cleansing system. When its cleansing cycle is activated, a streamlined wand with Wonderwave technology extends from the beneath the seat to provide a soothing warm flow of aerated water for complete cleansing. Because the water is drawn directly from the home’s fresh water supply, the Washlet delivers warm water that is always clean and pure. Once the cleansing cycle is completed, the user may engage the drying cycle, which uses warm air to gently dry the area, protecting environment by reducing the need for toilet tissue. Newest Technological Innovation Committed to People-First Innovation, TOTO advances are designed that meet people’s real world needs. To this end, the company introduced the first use of electrolyzed water designed to make the toilet bowl easier to clean. To create eWater+, TOTO engineers use only the home’s incoming water supply and the company’s patented technological process. eWater+ is applied to the bowl after every flush and once every eight hours during non-use. It returns to its natural state within two hours. A pre-misting of plain water further enhances bowl cleanliness by sealing the surface against the adherence of matter approximately 80% better than dry porcelain. eWater+ is good for the planet, too. It reduces the need for toxic chemicals used to clean the toilet, which helps to protect the environment as it saves consumers money on cleaning supplies and time cleaning the toilet. TOTO’s eWater+ technology is available on the Washlet S350e and S300e. Latest Design Innovation: Connect+ System TOTO’s innovative new Connect+ System neatly conceals the Washlet’s power cord and water supply hose for a clean installation. To achieve this, TOTO pre-drilled holes in Connect+ toilets behind the bowl (near the seat bolt holes), which enables specially-designed Washlets’ power cord and water supply hose to pass easily through, hiding them from view. Concealing the Connect+ Washlets’ power cord and water supply hose offers homeowners an elegant seamless look that enhances any bath décor. Comprised of specially designed Washlets and water-efficient Tornado Flush toilets, TOTO’s innovative new Connect+ System offers homeowners superior design aesthetics, water savings, technology, cleanliness and over 40 different combination possibilities. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday, April 17, from 2-3:30 EDT, will host an online webinar titled “DOE Certification, Compliance, and Enforcement Overview for Plumbing Products.”

Last year, U.S. Customs and Border Protection finalized regulations that allow officials to refuse admission of consumer products and industrial equipment that are found to be noncompliant with energy conservation and labeling standards, including plumbing products.

“This is the second time in the last couple of years that the plumbing industry has partnered with DOE to provide industry specific guidance,” said Dain Hansen, vice president of Government Relations for IAPMO. “With U.S. Customs and Border Protection now increasing its ability to enforce and refuse entry to noncompliant products, this training is coming at an opportune time.”

The webinar will explain the obligations that manufacturers, private labelers and importers must meet to ensure their plumbing products comply with the federal water consumption regulations. These obligations include testing in accordance with the appropriate test procedures to ensure compliance with the applicable standard and annually certifying to DOE the compliance of these products.

DOE will explain how to certify compliance as well as the steps DOE takes to ensure products are indeed compliant with their applicable standards. A recently implemented customs rule regarding importation of products regulated by DOE and the steps importers must take to ensure their products are properly imported prior to sale in the United States will also be discussed.

Under authority from the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 (as amended), DOE regulates the water consumption of specific plumbing products. These products include faucets, showerheads, water closets, urinals, and commercial pre-rinse spray valves.

IAPMO R&T Lab and IAPMO R&T have partnered with DOE for nearly 10 years as a provider of third-party testing and certification services to such DOE consumer product labeling programs as ENERGY STAR® and U.S. EPA’s WaterSense®.

Participants may register at https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/637357752. Webinar requires Windows® 8, 7, Vista, XP or 2003 Server; Mac OS®X 10.6 or newer; iPhone®, iPad®, AndroidTM phone or Android tablet.
