The Hub’s John Mesenbrink took part in some AR technology from the showroom.

Located on the building’s 10th floor, Sloan’s showroom space represents a return to the company’s origins, as Sloan was initially founded on nearby Jackson Boulevard prior to moving to its current Franklin Park headquarters in 1975. The new building features an office space and showroom, while Sloan’s manufacturing and corporate headquarters remains in Franklin Park.

“Sloan has been synonymous with Chicago since the company’s inception in 1906,” said Kirk Allen. “Today’s ribbon-cutting is a historic and exciting event as we expand our Chicago-area footprint with our new showroom and office space in the Fulton Market District, while returning to our roots where the company was built.”

LCD Display Guides User Through Five-step CDC Handwashing Process

Sloan has announced their BASYS® Guided Handwashing Faucet, designed and engineered to make proper handwashing a seamless and intuitive process.

Equipped with an LCD display guide, the sensor-activated faucet provides self-guided instruction for users to follow a five-step handwashing process in compliance with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) to improve hand hygiene.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the fact that clean hands can save lives and reduce the spread of germs,” said Graham Allen, Sloan co-president and CEO. “Our BASYS Guided Handwashing Faucet promotes proper handwashing practices to protect both yourself and others from getting sick.”

Sloan’s guided handwashing faucet walks the user through the following five self-guided instructions to ensure a CDC-compliant handwash:

  1. Wet – Wet your hands with clean running water
  2. Lather – Lather your hands together with soap
  3. Scrub – Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds (LCD display provides a timed countdown)
  4. Rinse – Rinse your hands well under clean, running water
  5. Dry – Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them

Furthermore, these BASYS Faucets embed sensor technology right where the water exits to initiate the flow of water on-demand, creating water-saving benefits and optimal hygiene for users.

With multiple heights to fit any application, BASYS offers a modular platform of body types, features, and components to meet the needs of any handwashing environment.

Also, all existing BASYS Faucets can be retrofitted with interchangeable BASYS Handwashing Crowns to fit the unique needs of a particular installation and provide enhanced hygiene measures. This makes the BASYS Guided Handwashing Faucet an ideal specification across diverse areas where handwashing compliance is a concern.

Franklin Park, Ill. — Recognized for his longstanding contributions to the industry, the Plumbing Contractors Association (PCA) inducted Sloan Executive Chairman, Charles (Chuck) S. Allen, into the Chicago Area Plumbing Industry Hall of Fame at a gala held on January 26, 2018.

A third generation descendant of William Elvis Sloan, Allen joins the company’s founder on the distinguished list of hall of fame awardees, after a career devoted to the global manufacturing of smart, sustainable commercial plumbing products.

“On behalf of the entire company, I am so honored to join the elite fraternity of accomplished professionals in the Plumbing Contractors Association Hall of Fame,” said Allen. “And on a personal level, to stand alongside William Elvis Sloan on that list is all the more gratifying. I could not have achieved this accolade without the help of those before me and all the bright minds walking the halls at Sloan today.”

Allen started his Sloan career in 1972 on the shop floor running machines. After earning an MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, he returned to the company as a sales representative in New York, working directly with wholesalers and contractors. For years, he applied his talents in the sales and marketing departments and was instrumental in Sloan’s partnership with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) and Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA). He served as president and CEO of Sloan from 1977 to 2008.

He assumed the title of executive chairman in 2008. While his three sons—Kirk, Jim and Graham—currently serve as co-president and CEO, Allen has remained an integral part of the company, contributing and helping to define Sloan’s strategic direction.

Under Allen’s guidance, Sloan has become a global brand synonymous with innovative, smart, sustainable and water efficient products. He was a pioneer who ushered in electronic plumbing technology such as battery operated sensor flushometers and faucets, at a time when manual flushometers and faucets were the industry norm. Chuck’s vision and persistence regarding electronic sensor technology heralded a whole new industry segment, that today is embraced by plumbing manufactures, contractors and end users.

“Water Connects Us® is more than just Sloan’s tagline,” Allen said. “Every day, around the world, Sloan products connect the systems that manage our planet’s most precious resource. We want to preserve the environment and continue to be the global leader for smart, sustainable restroom solutions that are as beautiful as they are innovative. We strive to elevate the total commercial restroom experience.”

Far too often government agencies preach one thing and do another, but for the USGBC they have truly put their words into action with their new headquarters in the Foggy Bottom district of Washington DC. Completed in 2007 the building has one purpose, to showcase to the public what green building could do.

usgbc-1

The first building to achieve Platinum Certification under LEED’s 3 new guidelines, it exemplifies high performance and energy efficiency blending together to create a healthy and productive environment. To do this, architects, engineers and contributing professionals strictly adhered to LEED and other green building guidelines to produce a design that had sustainability woven in every wall and corridor. Goals such as reducing water usage by 40% and overall energy use (as compared to the average office building) by 50% were set to ensure the building met expectations.

usgbc-4
Knowing Sloan’s commitment to the green movement, builders almost exclusively chose our products for their bathrooms. Selecting our SOLIS® solar-powered faucet, the UPPERCUT® dual-flush flushometer, XLERATOR® Hand Dryer, and WES-1000 Waterfree Urinal, the USGBC’s headquarters utilizes some our most advanced systems.

usgbc-3
When the nation’s leading organization for eco-friendly building decided it was time for a new headquarters there was much anticipation as to how efficient the building could actually be. When the final product was done interested parties were not disappointed as the new USGBC would be a shining example of what environmentally responsible building could and should be.

The goal of the building was to not only lead by example but to become a living and breathing lab for the commercial building industry. Far too often new technologies get overlooked out of fear they might not perform properly or for lack of data to support energy savings claims. At the USGBC headquarters, however, new and efficient products would also be showcased with the goal of not only educating builders but also to help the building attain its main goals of achieving the highest LEEDs certification possible and be the most efficient building possible.

usgbc-2Led by designers and contractors from both Perkins & Will and Davis Construction, the building renovation would incorporate principles of reclamation, recycling and efficiency into every hallway, office and bathroom. Giving new life to things left behind by the previous building occupants, the designs utilized existing materials like the terrazzo flooring, glass panels and granite countertops. Even the old office furniture was salvaged for the new building. For the bathrooms, careful attention was given to water and energy savings. Utilizing new technologies like waterfree urinals, low-flow faucets and dual-flush fixtures would be essential. For contractors, when it came time to selecting the right products they turned to the industry leader, Sloan. Currently all bathrooms in the building feature Sloan faucets, urinals, hand dryers, and of course flushometers.

usgbc-5The strategies combined to create one of, if not the most efficient office building in the US. Achieving the distinction of the first Platinum certified building in America the building earned 45 out of a possible 57 LEED points. More importantly, Sloan products contributed to the building receiving a perfect ranking in the water efficiency category, and an impressive overall reduction of water use by 40%.

Flushometer-SO-Enviornment_093The Sloan® Royal flushometer line for urinals and water closets has expanded with the development of new Sloan Royal reclaimed water flushometer models engineered specifically for use with reclaimed water infrastructure in new construction or major retrofits. These types of systems help municipalities that use reclaimed water as an alternative water source to help preserve potable water.

The Sloan Royal reclaimed water flushometer, available in manual and sensor configurations, is the first solution specifically designed to withstand the harsh conditions of reclaimed water.

In fact, all critical components of Sloan Royal reclaimed water flushometers, including the cover, valve body, control stop and the copper sweat solder kit, are made of semi-red brass. In addition, to better withstand the harsh conditions of reclaimed water, all organic rubber components have been replaced with synthetic compounds.

Sloan has also utilized the industry-standard purple color, which is used to identify water district/municipal water lines and other systems using reclaimed water, as mandated by both the Uniform Plumbing Code and the International Plumbing Code. Several key components including the wall flange, inner cover and diaphragm guide are colored purple to signify the use of reclaimed water. The flushometer also includes a wall plate communicating the use of reclaimed water and is available with an optional purple handle.
