Today, Bosch Thermotechnology Corp. announced a new line of tankless gas condensing water heaters. The Bosch Greentherm 9000 Series offers nine models for high-efficiency domestic hot water in residential or commercial applications, adding new features for easy installation, operation and maintenance. The Consumer Technology Association recently recognized the Greentherm 9900i SE model as a CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree2.
The Greentherm 9000 Series features an Energy Factor of 0.99 with Thermal Efficiency of 100%, which is the highest in the industry for condensing gas water heaters. This series achieves temperature stability of plus- or minus- two degrees Fahrenheit through the active bypass. Furthermore, its advanced technology seamlessly controls output capacity, optimizing comfort and efficiency by combining the burner’s pulsating mode with the bypass valve to achieve the desired outlet temperature, even at low flow rates. Its wide operating range – between 9,000 and 199,000 Btu, saves energy when hot water demand is low.
The Greentherm 9000 Series models feature sleek, rounded corners on the metal cabinet, making these water heaters as beautiful as they are energy-efficient. The premium 9900i SE model has a unique, stylish glass front and integrated Wi-Fi control – also an option on other models – enabling the homeowner to control water heater remotely via a free mobile app. The Wi-Fi module communicates with the app to provide operating performance information to the user, and sends any alerts directly to a compatible smartphone. Outdoor models feature a concealed, built-in controller with optional Wi-Fi connectivity.
“We designed the Bosch Greentherm 9000 Series with the installer in mind,” said Freddie Molina, tankless product manager of Bosch Thermotechnology Corp. “For indoor units, top-mounted water connections allow for easier, faster replacement of a tank-type water heater. The patented OptiFlow combustion management system automatically adjusts for a variety of installation conditions, including flue length and altitude, eliminating the need for a combustion analyzer in most installations to simplify the installation process.”
Each model offers simple conversion to LPG using the included manifold injector kit, which eliminates stocking both LP and NG units, thus saving the wholesaler’s inventory cost.
Installation permits up to 60 feet of venting with two-inch pipe, or 280 feet of venting with three-inch pipe, using a wide range of venting material options. It may be used with half-inch or three-quarter-inch gas line with appropriate connection3, and a built-in recirculation pump1 allows for simpler installations. The Greentherm 9000 Series requires no dedicated return line, decreasing wait time for hot water at the tap, thus reducing water waste and saving an estimated 11,000 gallons a year per household.
The commercial Greentherm 9000 models offer heavy-duty primary and secondary heat exchangers for longer lifespan, and deliver water supply temperature to 180°F. Systems also can be cascaded up to 24 units to achieve flow rates of more than 200 gallons per minute – ideal for commercial buildings, schools and hotels.
Residential units offer a standard 15-year limited warranty on the heat exchanger and a five-year limited warranty on parts – see full warranty details, or learn more about the Bosch Greentherm 9000 Series on www.boschheatingandcooling.com.

Much has already been said about the safety improvements homeowners and business owners can anticipate by switching from traditional water heaters to tankless models.
Usually the discussions have revolved around the half a million scald or burn incidents happening every year, many caused by overheated tap water from an old or uncalibrated water heater. According to the Burn Foundation, more than one-sixth of all childhood hospitalizations from scalds happen because of hot tap water.
That said, another threat endangers those who use both residential and commercial tank heaters: Legionnaires’ disease. What causes Legionnaires’ bacteria to grow and how can traditional tank heaters put your home or business at risk?
“Legionella grow in still warm water.”
What is Legionnaire’s disease?
Legionnaires’ disease is actually a body of diseases – more than 43 according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration – all caused by the same bacteria called Legionella. This pathogen grows in still warm water. If inhaled through water vapor, these bacteria could cause fever, pneumonia, comas and even death.
So, how does a standard hot water tank turn into a Petri dish for Legionella? Unfortunately, a few different ways.
How can hot water tanks produce Legionella?
Fiddling with hot water tank temperatures for energy efficiency gains could set off a chain reaction producing Legionella. Many energy experts, including the U.S. Department of Energy, recommend setting hot water tanks to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to shave a few bucks off a home gas bill. Unfortunately, Legionella can survive that temperature and prosper. OSHA recommends keeping tanks at 140 degrees, which effectively neutralizes Legionella-infected water, but hot water at that temperature could easily scald children or seniors with sensitive skin. Either way, water tank owners lose.
“Sediment collecting in water tank can encourage Legionella growth.”
Sediment collecting at the bottom of a dilapidated water tank can also encourage Legionella growth. If tank owners neglect to flush their systems at least once a year to rid systems of calcium carbonate buildup – common in areas with high water hardness – and other debris, Legionella could develop with time.
Legionella also breeds in pipes where stagnant hot water cools below that 120-degree mark. As hot water trapped between a water tank to a faucet or tap cools, it becomes more and more susceptible to infection.
Fight disease with tankless water heaters for your home
Tankless water heaters provide a number of solutions for these problems. First and foremost, automated technology controls hot water temperatures right at the source, so it’s always the perfect temperature: warm enough to prevent waterborne disease, cool enough to avoid scalds and energy-efficient enough to keep monthly bills low.
Point-of-use tankless water heaters not only forego the large cylindrical basin where Legionella can grow, but also reduce the piping needed to deliver water from a utility to the faucet, thus eliminating another threat. Water moves directly from the public system, into the home and right to the tap where it’s heated on demand
.If your hot water heater isn’t working for you, it’s working against you. Choose tankless models to prevent the spread of Legionella, protect your family from overheated water and save money on your energy bill.

Bosch Thermotechnology Corp. launches its new Bosch Hydronic Air Handlers offering a more efficient, compact and advanced home heating system. When paired with the Bosch Greentherm Gas Condensing Tankless Water Heater, homeowners can benefit from a more efficient heating system with a virtually endless supply of domestic hot water.
The new Bosch Hydronic Air Handler can replace furnaces with a ducted system, eliminating the need for a gas pipe, venting and fresh air intake required for furnaces.
The entire system is easily managed by an integrated control board that connects to the home’s thermostat. When the thermostat calls for heat, the air handler immediately activates the integrated pump, turning on the fan 30 seconds later, allowing the heat exchanger to preheat to deliver comfortable warm air from start-up. After the thermostat is satisfied, the blower runs an additional 30 seconds to deliver conditioned air. The Bosch Hydronic Air Handler has an integrated pump timer that turns on the water circulator for 2 minutes every six hours to help prevent bacteria growth in the hot water system.
The Bosch air handler may be configured to work with A/C systems, providing a complete heating, cooling and hot water solution. When the thermostat calls for cooling, the control board activates only the blower.
The new hydronic air handler connects seamlessly with tankless water heaters, transferring the unit’s highly efficient hot water through a hydronic heating coil. As the hot water circulates through the pipe, warm air is sent through the residential duct system. The cool water in the hydronic coil then recirculates to the tankless unit to be reheated. Two models – AHU 50 and AHU 70 – can be sized with most cfm and BTU output ratings to suit most typical size homes.
Combining both the Bosch Hydronic Air Handler and an ENERGY STAR 95% EF-rated Greentherm Tankless Water Heater results in an ultra-efficient heating and domestic hot water system. Plus, the combined system can provide home heating and hot water simultaneously so homeowners don’t sacrifice comfort. The product carries a limited five year parts and one-year limited labor warranty (see full warranty details at www.boschheatingandcooling.com).
