Dormont today upheld its safety-first initiative by announcing its new SmartSense™ Excess Flow Valve & Thermal Shutoff device. Designed to help protect against excessive gas flows, gas-related fires, and even explosions, SmartSense’s advanced dual-sensing technology sets new industry standards for ensuring residential gas appliance connection safety.
SmartSense features an internal valve mechanism that automatically reduces gas flow in the event of a dangerous downstream gas line rupture. Gas flow to the in-home appliance is thereby restricted until an upstream manual shutoff valve is closed or the gas leak is repaired. Once fixed, SmartSense automatically resets and a normal gas flow is restored to the appliance.
SmartSense also includes thermal shutoff capabilities to detect increased temperatures and terminate gas flow, thereby minimizing or preventing damages within your home. Each valve, constructed with an internal sensing ring, activates and automatically stops gas flow to your in-home appliance when exposed to temperatures between 350°F and 425°F.
The Dormont SmartSense is easily installed and remains compatible with modern residential gas appliances. Both CSA design-certified and California DSA-listed, the SmartSense device can be mounted either horizontally or vertically with gas appliances. The Dormont SmartSense is Made in the USA.

Milwaukee Tool continues to revolutionize the tool industry with the introduction of the new M18 FUEL™ SURGE™ ¼” Hex Hydraulic Driver. The SURGE™ uses a technology called FLUID-DRIVE™ Hydraulic Powertrain* which allows it to operate 50% quieter, with 3X less vibration, and achieve longer sustained torque compared to standard impact drivers. “Due to their versatility, compact size and high speed, impact drivers are easily one of the most prevalent tools on the jobsite, and we continue to drive innovation in this category. From the revolutionary performance delivered through M18 FUEL™ in 2012, to the major productivity enhancements delivered through ONE-KEY™ in early 2016, Milwaukee has always been on the forefront of fastening technology. We are excited to once again bring this category to the next level with SURGE™,” said Cole Conrad, Group Product Manager for Milwaukee Tool.
“With the combination of M18 FUEL™ technologies and FLUID-DRIVE™ Hydraulic Powertrain, SURGE™ provides a better user experience through quieter operation and less vibration, while driving small to medium diameter fasteners equal to or faster than a standard impact driver.”
The new SURGE™ operates 50% quieter than standard impacts, which not only makes it an excellent option for quieter work environments such as maintenance in an occupied building, it also provides inherent hearing benefits. The new tool can be used for an 8 hour day in most common applications while remaining below the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirement for hearing protection. With up to 3X less vibration, the smoother performance of SURGE™ provides more control and creates less fatigue and strain on the user. T
he exclusive FLUID-DRIVE™ Hydraulic Powertrain design essentially replaces the traditional hammer and anvil mechanism found in standard impacts with a hydraulic mechanism that generates the power necessary to create torque. Because there’s no metal-on-metal contact, the net result is smoother performance, with a decrease in noise and vibration, as well as longer sustained torque. With faster driving speeds than standard impacts in certain applications, and 450 in/lbs of sustained torque, the new tool delivers unmatched performance.
“In our testing, users were blown away when we told them this tool had 450 in/lbs of torque because it is common for ¼” impact drivers to have up to 1800 in/lbs,” said Cole Conrad. “The difference is peak torque vs sustained torque. In a standard impact, the tool reaches peak torque very quickly but only holds it for a brief period of time. With the longer sustained torque delivered in SURGE™, peak torque is reached faster and maintained for a longer period of time, allowing it to do the same amount of work at a lower torque rating (see graph below). The result is a superior fastening solution designed specifically for small to medium diameter fasters, which make up the vast majority of applications performed by MEP trades.”
As with all M18 FUEL™ products**, the new tools feature three Milwaukee®-exclusive innovations — the POWERSTATE™ Brushless Motor, REDLITHIUM™ XC5.0 Battery Pack and REDLINK PLUS™ Intelligence Hardware and Software— to deliver unmatched performance, durability and run-time.
*FLUID-DRIVE™ Hydraulic Powertrain- When paired with the exclusive technologies in M18 FUEL™, the SURGE™ is in a class of its own. The “oil-impulse” options available today ask the user to choose between some pretty significant trade-offs. Some options focus on speed and torque at the expense of size and weight, while others focus on ergonomics at the expense of performance. With the new M18 FUEL™ SURGE™ ¼” Hex Hydraulic Driver users will experience the best of both worlds- all the holistic benefits of an oil impulse mechanism without the extreme trade-offs.
**M18 FUEL™ is engineered for the most demanding tradesmen in the world. Delivering unrivaled performance, all M18 FUEL™ products feature three Milwaukee®-exclusive innovations—The POWERSTATE™ Brushless Motor, REDLITHIUM™ Battery Pack and REDLINK PLUS™ Intelligence Hardware and Software—that deliver unmatched power, run-time and durability on the jobsite. Simply put, M18 FUEL™ tools are the most powerful 18V cordless tools in their class.

InSinkErator®, a business unit of St. Louis-based Emerson Electric Co. (NYSE: EMR), has important information for property managers and developers. Residents love disposers for the convenience, but industry professionals have strong incentives to appreciate them as well, including potential cost savings from solid waste disposal fees, fewer nuisance rodents and pests attracted by curbside and dumpster collection—plus an improved environmental impact by possibly reducing landfill additions.
Recognizing all the benefits of in-sink disposers, earlier this year the city of Philadelphia started requiring in-sink disposers in all new residential construction.
In-sink disposers also help builders reach the National Green Building Standard, the ICC/ANSI- approved residential green building rating system. Each unit installed contributes one point towards the National Green Building Standard.
“There are still a lot of myths surrounding use of food waste disposers”, said Michael Keleman, Manager of Environmental Engineering at InSinkErator. “Today’s models grind food waste better and more quietly than ever before. This significantly reduces clogged pipes and jammed units while allowing modern municipal waste treatment systems to capitalize on the environmental advantages of the waste at collection facilities.”
Most municipal sewer districts already employ reclamation systems to convert biodegradable materials from their sanitary systems into compost and natural gas. That creates local and regional promotional and goodwill opportunities for facility-wide applications, particularly in larger developments.
InSinkErator works with developers, property management groups and communities across the United States to evaluate the potential for cost savings and environmental credits in their properties. For more information, visit http://www.insinkerator.com/savings. Or, contact:

Powers today launched the LFLM496-HTK, a mixing valve that installs on a hot water tank to increase hot water capacity by providing greater control over water temperature and flow. The valve allows water to be stored at higher temperatures, extending water heater capacity by as much as 133% (depending on storage and incoming cold water temperature).
The lead free LFLM496-HTK valve helps minimize the occurrence of Legionella and risk of scalding. By extending hot water capacity, it eliminates the need to replace a hot water tank with a larger-capacity unit. The valve is listed to ASSE 1070, ASSE 1017 and IAPMO cUPC. It comes complete with integral filters, checks, and union connections and has a lockable temperature adjustment and a 5°F approach temperature.
