Viega LLC announced its Manufacturing Apprenticeship Program with the assistance of Hutchinson Community College.

Viega is currently interviewing and selecting students for the program which will start in January, 2017. In addition to receiving a paid position working in Viega’s plastics, metals, machining or maintenance divisions, students who are selected for the program will receive a three-year associate’s degree paid-in-full by Viega with the potential to earn other employee benefits. Graduates of Viega’s apprenticeship program will also be offered a full-time position from Viega upon graduation.

“Historically, it has been a challenge to find qualified highly technical employees for our operations,” said Eric Wicker, director of manufacturing, Viega. “The program was started to build future talent as we grow and expand in McPherson. This would allow us to grow that talent from the ground up in a program specifically tailored to cover what we feel is critical to succeed at Viega.”

To supply its distribution network, Viega opened its central, 439,000-square-foot manufacturing and distribution facility in McPherson in 2009. The facility is now home to Viega’s vertically integrated PEX manufacturing. In 2016, Viega began production of Viega MegaPress fittings at a new 80,000-square-foot facility on its McPherson campus.

Established in 1928, Hutchinson Community College offers more than 1,300 courses for more than 120 majors. HCC programs are advised by industry leaders, who ensure its programs are meeting employer needs and that its students are workforce-ready. Its programs are also industry certified, increasing employment opportunities for its graduates.

Grundfos is extending its SL and SE range of wastewater pumps to include “medium,” “high” and “super high” hydraulic offerings from 12 to 42 horsepower (HP). Designed to handle raw, unscreened sewage, effluent and large volumes of surface and process water, the extended selection ensures the highest pump efficiencies over a wider range of demand and the largest free passage of solids at the lowest vibrations.

With its simple yet hydraulically efficient S-tube impeller, the extended range enables free passage of solids up to five inches, which is ideal for large flows of raw sewage. Intelligent and self-adaptive controls allow the pump to adjust to changing operating conditions, while high-efficiency motors meet or exceed global standards. These crucial design elements give the SL and SE range trouble-free operation, best-in-class non-clogging capabilities and the lowest life cycle cost.

Dormont today upheld its safety-first initiative by announcing its new SmartSense™ Excess Flow Valve & Thermal Shutoff device. Designed to help protect against excessive gas flows, gas-related fires, and even explosions, SmartSense’s advanced dual-sensing technology sets new industry standards for ensuring residential gas appliance connection safety.

SmartSense features an internal valve mechanism that automatically reduces gas flow in the event of a dangerous downstream gas line rupture. Gas flow to the in-home appliance is thereby restricted until an upstream manual shutoff valve is closed or the gas leak is repaired. Once fixed, SmartSense automatically resets and a normal gas flow is restored to the appliance.

SmartSense also includes thermal shutoff capabilities to detect increased temperatures and terminate gas flow, thereby minimizing or preventing damages within your home. Each valve, constructed with an internal sensing ring, activates and automatically stops gas flow to your in-home appliance when exposed to temperatures between 350°F and 425°F.

The Dormont SmartSense is easily installed and remains compatible with modern residential gas appliances. Both CSA design-certified and California DSA-listed, the SmartSense device can be mounted either horizontally or vertically with gas appliances. The Dormont SmartSense is Made in the USA.

Winsupply Inc., one of the largest distributors in the nation, announced the hiring of Grady Collins as chief financial officer (CFO), and the promotion of Jeff Dice to vice president of Shared Services.

In addition to the appointments of Collins and Dice, Roland Gordon, who was named president of Winsupply earlier this year and served as interim CFO, will add to his responsibilities working with the company’s Information Technology (IT) teams developing strategies and prioritizing IT projects. Collins joins Winsupply from HA-International LLC (HAI), Westmont, Ill., a leading supplier of foundry products, where he served as chief financial officer, vice president of finance, and treasurer. He will be responsible for managing the company’s accounting, finance, tax, and risk management departments.

“Grady is a results-oriented senior executive who brings more than 18 years of diversified finance experience,” Gordon said. “He has been active in helping make key decisions on the strategic direction and business planning of the companies for which he’s served. He also set the tone for ensuring integrity of all internal and external financial reporting.”

Prior to joining HAI, Collins worked at Hexion Inc., Columbus, Ohio, which was a 50 percent owner of HAI until June of this year. He joined Hexion in 2004 as manager of financial reporting and held global controllership and international business finance leadership roles in the US, Australia and the UK. Earlier in his career, he was an audit manager at Deloitte & Touche LLC in Columbus. Collins is a registered certified public accountant in the state of Ohio and received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from The Ohio State University. He will relocate from Oak Park, Ill., to the Dayton area in the coming months.

Dice’s position as vice president of Shared Services is a new role at Winsupply. “Most of our back office service departments will roll up under Jeff including accounts payable, credit, payroll and support among others,” Gordon said. “Jeff has a great working relationship with the finance and operations teams, as well as with the local companies. Jeff’s in-depth knowledge of all aspects of our business will allow him to drive efficiencies and productivity in new ways to achieve greater levels of profitability.”

Dice joined Winsupply as the president of Winsupply Group Services – Dayton in 2004. In 2005, he moved to the Winsupply corporate office as a financial analyst to work special projects and organize the internal audit functions. He became vice president of Electronic Data Integration in 2008. He was appointed chief financial officer of Winsupply’s wholly owned subsidiary Noland Company in 2011. Before joining Winsupply Group Services, Dice was an audit manager at Battelle and Battelle Inc. (now RSM US LLP) in Dayton. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Indiana University and is a certified public accountant.

Join RIDGID® in celebrating the trades with a 2017 Commemorative Limited Edition Calendar featuring original calendar art from popular tattoo artists and illustrators that can proudly be displayed anywhere.

“Whether it’s our latest tool or newest Calendar edition, RIDGID is always looking for innovative ways to support and represent the trades,” said Fred Pond, president of RIDGID. “Since our original Calendar launched in 1935, the industry has changed. These changes provided an opportunity to put together a commemorative calendar that is both inspirational and a source of pride for the industry.”

The Calendar will be launched on October 20 at CONNECT 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. Hosted by the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC), the tradeshow and conference includes training opportunities for current and future professionals.

“For years RIDGID has been a proud supporter of PHCC and their educational programs, making their event ideal to introduce the Calendar,” said Pond. “Incorporated into the Calendar are industry insights, including a staggering statistic on the number of jobs needing to be filled in the trades in coming years. The PHCC apprentice contest, highlighted at CONNECT, is one way our industry is helping to elevate and celebrate the trades.”

In fact, some reports show as many as 3.1 million available trade jobs with an additional 2.1 million forecasted within two years, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While analysts debate the potential effects of this perfect storm of diminishing supply and increased demand, RIDGID is looking for new ways to help attract new industry talent.

Through tool donations and monetary support to trade schools, RIDGID has been an active advocate of the trades. In 2017, the company plans to announce additional initiatives designed to help drive awareness and combat the alarming trade shortage trends.

The Calendar will be available for purchase at RIDGID.com beginning October 20.
