I just finished up an awesome few days at the 2016 AHR EXPO in Orlando, Florida. And what a show it was with over 60,000 in attendance. This show was top notch top to bottom and front to back. This show had fantastic energy and displayed some great new products. And even though it’s considered an HVACR show, there’s plenty of products, tools, and technology for plumbers and plumbing contractors to learn about, especially those that install and service any top of radiant heating and hydronic systems whether it be residential or commercial.
For those who were unable to attend, I will highlight a few items that caught my attention as unique.
The ROPOWER® by Rothenberger

This nifty RoPower tool by Rothenberger can thread a pipe quickly but one of the greatest advantages it has is its ability to thread pipe with the proper amount of threads so plumbers and installers no longer need to count each thread. You set it, forget it, and the machine does all the work for you correctly.
Key Features
- Quick and reliable threading, trimming, deburring, and grooving
- Die head Type R (automatic with integrated oil feed)
- Complete pre- and post-processing of pipe
Milwaukee® Tool’s M12™ 7.8KP Thermal Imager with DUAL SENSE™ Pixels

This unique Thermal Imager from Milwaukee Tool can easily assist in finding leaks under concrete and behind walls. The Imager is fully compatible with the simple and powerful Thermal Imager Report Software available online at www.milwaukeetool.com, which makes analyzing images and generating reports quick and easy. Contractors and plumbers can easily download images from the Thermal Imager and show them to their customer on a larger screen such as a laptop, tablet, or any other computer. Every image capture creates a versatile PNG file format image that can also be easily e-mailed for added convenience. This powerful device comes at a very affordable price for all plumbers at around $500.
Webstone Pro-Connect™ Valves & Fittings

This new ProConnect product from Webstone simplifies the connection process of connecting to Pex, CPVC, and the Aquatherm product. Some additional benefits include:
Key Features
- No more solder, glue, clamps, costly tools or clean-up!
- Push-on connection to copper, CPVC or PEX
- Easily recover from installation & deburring mishaps
- Forged from DZR Brass for use underground
Most Unique Experience At The AHR EXPO
This belongs to Rheem who displayed their mobile traveling trailer experience fully loaded with their products on display with a side-deck that expanded from the side of the trailer like a modern RV living room to display additional HVAC products. In addition, they displayed an 8-panel network of hi-resolution touch screens to interact with and take a look inside from every angle of their products. This state-of-the-art mobile learning center can be customized to offer hands-on product training, host special events or serve as an alternative to a trade show booth. It can also be easily rebranded to showcase either Rheem or Ruud products.
This experience was certainly a unique highlight of the show. Learn more about this Mobile Trailer Experience by Rheem.

Sioux Chief Manufacturing, makers of Rough-In plumbing copper and plastic supply fittings, PEX tubing, drainage fixtures and support hangers; has announced its intentions to construct a new headquarters facility in Kansas City, Missouri.Sioux Chief’s singular factory and headquarters is currently located in the Kansas City suburb of Peculiar, Missouri.
The new manufacturing facility will be located in the NW corner of the CenterPoint complex in south Kansas City, formerly the site of Richards Gebaur Air Force Base.
Company overview – Sioux Chief Manufacturing Co., Inc. was founded in August of 1957 by the late Martin E. “Ed” Ismert, Jr., and began its operations, fabricating a single product line in a rented 3,000 square foot, third floor of the Double I Supply Company, a Kansas City, Kansas, plumbing wholesaler. In 1967, Sioux Chief relocated to Kansas City, Missouri and in 1970, moved to Grandview, Missouri, where it operated from 1970 until 1983, growing its line to two basic products and its employee base to 18.That year, the corporation purchased its own 22,500 sq. ft. building, located just south of Peculiar, Missouri, where it operates today in a 378,000 square foot plant, warehouse and office complex today we produce more than 100 different lines of product….comprising more than 7,000 different items.
Their Supply, Drainage and Support lines include many product and processing innovations the company has developed over the years. Sioux Chief Mfg. currently holds more than 30 U.S. Patents. Sioux Chief invests itself in technology, certifications, processes, inspections and evaluations on the front end so that they can hand the very best American made plumbing products to their customers on the front line, helping them to be successful.
As Sioux Chief looks to continue to expand, a focus has been placed on developing a long term real estate strategy. Their current site would allow for some expansion but could not accommodate the current need for 600,000 square feet, or the anticipated growth needs projected to one day be in excess of 1,000,000 square feet. The CenterPoint Intermodal site delivers both the space projection and promises a smoother transition, being relatively close to their existing campus. When Sioux Chief receives all the necessary approvals to proceed with this project, it will eventually relocate all of its corporate headquarters along with the majority of its manufacturing and distribution operations to Kansas City, Missouri. Plans include expanding its World-Class extrusion operation at its current location near Peculiar, as well as adding complementary operations there.

When 20 of the nation’s top plumbing apprentices competed for the title of “The Nation’s Best” during PHCC’s annual Plumbing & HVAC Apprentice Contests, the contestants, each sponsored by an industry manufacturer, were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. “This is a challenging competition that serves as a great reflection of each contestant’s dedicationto knowledge and growth within the industry,” said Maurer. “You really have to be familiar withday-to-day, on-the-job training, and the benefit of participating in something like the PHCCApprentice Contest is seeing how you measure up against your peers and competitors.”
In addition to walking away with a vast amount of new tools, which were donated by theindustry’s leading manufacturers, Peterson was also awarded two trophies and $1,000 in prizemoney.

TACO REORGANIZES & REINVENTS ITSELF AS A GLOBAL BRAND
No Longer Just a Heating & Cooling Company
At the AHR Expo, Orlando, FL, January 25, 2016 – In order to diversify and facilitate entry into new industries and market channels, Taco®, Inc. has completed a major structural reorganization which starts with a change of name: Taco, Inc. is now Taco Comfort Solutions™, a Taco Group Company.
The new name reflects Taco’s long experience and commitment to provide optimal indoor comfort while pursuing the highest efficiency in products that save energy and resources.
Taco Now a Global Brand
Under the privately-held company’s new organizational structure, Taco Comfort Solutions is a part of the Taco Group. Other worldwide elements of the Taco Group include Hydroflo Pumps/Fluid Solutions™ of Fairview, TN, Askoll/Taco Flow Solutions™ of Sandrigo, Italy and Taco Trading/Supply Chain Solutions Ltd.™ of Kowloon, Hong Kong.
The Taco Group includes operations and sales offices in the U.S, Canada, Panama, Italy, Dubai, South Korea, China and Vietnam, making Taco a truly global brand.
The Askoll Acquisition
The Taco Group’s biggest move to date is its just completed acquisition of Italian pump manufacturer Askoll®’s indoor heating pump company. Now called Taco Italia SrL and using the trade name Askoll/Taco Flow Solutions, Taco is now a new player in the European hydronics market.
Askoll’s patented ECM technology has already been employed in Taco’s newly introduced 00e™ Series high-efficiency circulator line. 00e pumps and circulators use up to 85% less electricity than standard models and are ideal for use in systems zoned with circulators or zone valves.
Moving Beyond HVAC
In addition to expanding its core business in heating and cooling through its acquisition of Askoll’s indoor heating business and entry into the European HVAC market, Taco Comfort Solutions intends to pursue growth and diversification through additional new partnerships and acquisitions, and to diversify by branching out into vertical markets and channels, both in HVAC and non-HVAC.
One such non-HVAC but closely related market is plumbing. Taco has developed smart plumbing products that conserve water and provide instant hot water. Drought in the western U.S. has opened up new markets for these products based on the pressing need to save water.
Totally separate from HVAC and plumbing, its Hydroflo Pumps/Fluid Solutions company manufactures pumps used in such industries as irrigation and agriculture. Hydroflo, headquartered in Tennessee, has assembly operations in Indiana, Arkansas, Texas and California, and a sales/distribution office in Panama City, Panama.
Taco’s Product Supermarket
Taco’s 96-year history reflects continual product advancements in controlling the flow of water in hydronic-based systems. As a solutions provider, Taco has developed a broad portfolio of electronic controls, valves, tanks, pumps, heat exchangers, high-efficiency variable speed drives, ECM circulators and a wide array of ancillary product and accessories.
Taco’s full suite of products provide efficient system flow control ranging from single family residential to large-scale commercial HVAC and plumbing applications. These Taco “Product Supermarket” solutions deliver high-efficiency, lower first costs, longer operational life, sustainability and energy conservation.
Owner’s Comment
“This is dynamic and exciting time for Taco,” says Owner and Chairman John Hazen White, Jr. “We are taking these actions from a position of strength and confidence to ensure Taco’s continuing success. As we do so, we will remain ever faithful and committed to the people and the core values that together have made Taco a great company. As Taco approaches its100th anniversary in business, we are no longer an American company based in RI but a global company based in the U.S.A.”

Somerton, Arizona will provide free plumbing repairs and perform other water conservation modifications in the homes of low-income seniors under a program aimed at reducing their water bills. The city next month will begin accepting applications for participation for the program, in which the city also will do basic plumbing inspections, replace toilets and other fixtures with more efficient models, and put in desert plants that need less water. The program is the first of its kind offered in the city, and the service will be free to those who qualify.
“Typically, it can be harder for older people to note if there are leaks,” said Samuel Palacios, the city’s public works director, “or their homes are real old and the (plumbing) fixtures aren’t efficient. Also, they typically are the people whose incomes won’t let them make those repairs. This program is intended for them.”The program, he added, will be funded entirely by the city, and will include such services as inspections of all plumbing fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen, inspection of yard watering systems to determine if they need repairs or should be replaced. The program also pays for materials.
To qualify, people must be 62 or older, meet low-income guidelines and live in their own homes inside the city limits.”In this city, there are a lot of homes of older people with low incomes, and there are a lot of old homes, particularly on the streets to the north and south of Main Street,” Palacios said. “We hope the water conservation program will help reduce their monthly water bills.”The city will publicize the program and review applications to select a list of participants in March and April, Palacios said.
The plumbing inspections and repairs are scheduled to begin in May.
